Hello again!
So this week’s main blog post is going to be humanitarian
organizations that have an impact in the South Sudan!
I have chosen three organizations to talk about:
·
War Child International
·
International Committee of the Red Cross
·
Gua Africa
War Child
International
War Child
International is a compilation of independent humanitarian organizations that
work together to protect children in war-stricken places. The organization
consists of the three organizations of War Child Holland, War Child North
America, and War Child UK, all of which are completely separate even though
their goals are similar. Also, within each individual country these
organizations work with “local grass roots organizations.” They believe that
showing the children hope and peace through their works will teach the children
to be more peaceful and caring as adults.
Its mission statement:
"War Child International exists to create the conditions that will fulfill the protection, development and survival rights for children and young people who are living with or recovering from the effects of armed conflict. We believe in the power of children and young people, and so will ensure they participate in decisions which affect their lives so that their voices will be heard and thei contributions made to count."

I like this organization because of its focus on the future.
It recognizes that there must be an end to conflict and they want to do all
they can to prevent conflict from starting again. They don’t do this by trying
to force compromise between leaders of the conflicting groups, but my teaching
the impressionable children how to be good, kind citizens of their countries.
They believe educating the adults of the future, the children, is they way to a
peaceful world.
International
Committee of the Red Cross
The
International Committee of the Red Cross, “based on the Geneva Conventions of
1949, is an “independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian
protections and assistance for victims of war and armed violence.” All states
in the world are connected through four Geneva Conventions that “protect
wounded, sick and shipwrecked members of the armed forces, prisoners of war and
civilians.”
Its
mission statement:
“The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an
impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian
mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and
other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC also
endeavors to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law
and universal humanitarian principles. Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the
origin of the Geneva Conventions and the International Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement. It directs and coordinates the international activities
conducted by the Movement in armed conflicts and other situations of violence.”
In
South Sudan:
· “Visits places of
detention to monitor conditions and treatment”
· “Gives legal advice and
support to South Sudanese government”
· Has a medical team at
the Malakal Teaching Hospital to provide trauma and emergency surgical care,
pediatric care, and physiotherapy care as well as war surgery
· ICRC has two
rehabilitation centers in South Sudan, in Juba and Rumbek that provide orthotic
services, wheelchair services, etc.
· Works to improve water
supply to hospitals and donates medical supplies to other hospitals
· “Distributes basic
household items, food, seed, and other things like fishing nets” to families
that are affected by violence
· Works with the Ministry
of Animal Resources and Fisheries on animal vaccination programs
· “Repairs and builds
public water points and treatment plants in places affected by violence”
· Supports the South Sudan

I
like this organization because, even though it doesn’t necessarily think about
the future, it does what it can to make the present bearable so people can look
to the future. They try to take the burdens off of the citizens of the
countries they help so they can look to grow.
Gua Africa
Gua Africa was founded by Emmanuel
Jal to provide education to children so they have the opportunity to impact
their country.
"Our founder Emmanuel Jal would not have been able to create Gua Africa without the support he received from others to complete his schooling. Education can make a fundamental, life changing difference. It can lift people out of the disadvantages they face and towards a brighter future. Education is also crucial to long-term global development, as it empowers both the individual and the community and underpins many other key areas such as health and protection of the environment. Our role is to provide classrooms in which to learn, train teachers to a high standard and provide scholarships into higher educations."
Emmanuel Jal's statement: Gua Africa: Take Education Seriously

Gua Africa
Like War CHild International, I like how Gua Africa wants to make the world a better place through empowering people and allowing them to become the individuals they are.
